Traditional health care has a new ally. Some patients with sleep disorders, back pain, and diabetes are now being prescribed app-based treatment instead of drugs. Algorithms are helping cancer patients manage their symptoms, and video games are improving the attention span of children diagnosed with ADHD. A new class of medicine called digital therapeutics (DTx) is gaining traction and transforming the way patients engage with the health care system. In Medicine without Meds, Dean Ho, Yoann Sapanel, and Agata Blasiak explore the exciting potential for these digital therapies to transform patient care. Ho, Sapanel, and Blasiak share their insights on how these therapies can deliver value beyond the technology, address the challenges of implementation in existing health care models, and revolutionize care delivery. These clinicians, researchers, engineers, patients, start-up founders, and corporate executives are at the forefront of designing and building tomorrow's DTx. They explain what DTx represents, how it differs from other digital health solutions, and how these tools can be conceptualized, created, and brought to market. Throughout, case studies from leading DTx organization such as Akili Interactive, MedRhythms, and Welldoc illuminate best practices in product development, issues to consider, and pitfalls to avoid. These essays, along with a foreword by D. A. Wallach and Dr. Eddie Martucci's outlook on the future of DTx, present the exciting potential for DTx to reimagine health care for all.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0597/7689/2989/files/9781421447032_e3c691a5-42c6-4158-bd7d-156f199de5b8.jpg?v=1716899117
policing-pregnant-bodies-from-ancient-greece-to-post-roe-america
Policing Pregnant Bodies: From Ancient Greece to Post-Roe America

Explores the historical roots of controversies over abortion, fetal personhood, miscarriage, and maternal mortality. On June 24, 2022, the US Supreme Court overturned the Roe v. Wade decision, asserting that the Constitution did not confer the right to abortion. This ruling, in the Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health case, was the culmination of a half-century of pro-life activism promoting the idea that fetuses are people and therefore entitled to the rights and protections that the Constitution guarantees. But it was also the product of a much longer history of archaic ideas about the relationship between pregnant people and the fetuses they carry. In Policing Pregnant Bodies: From Ancient Greece to Post-Roe America, historian Kathleen M. Crowther discusses the deeply rooted medical and philosophical ideas that continue to reverberate in the politics of women's health and reproductive autonomy. From the idea that a detectable heartbeat is a sign of moral personhood to why infant and maternal mortality rates in the United States have risen as abortion restrictions have gained strength, this is a historically informed discussion of the politics of women's reproductive rights. Crowther explains why pro-life concern for fetuses has led not just to laws restricting or banning abortion but also to delaying or denying treatment to women for miscarriages as well as police investigations of miscarriages. She details the failure to implement policies that would actually improve the quality of infant life, such as guaranteed access to medical care, healthy food, safe housing, and paid maternity leave. Originally conceived with the express purpose of destroying Soviet tanks, the Air Force only developed it to keep funding away from the Army's response to the mission, the AH-56 Cheyenne helicopter. Inspired by the biography of a tank-busting German pilot in World War II, the engineering and design of the A-10 fell to Pierre Sprey, a precocious civilian who'd enrolled at Yale when he was just 15-years-old, and now, barely 30, was exiled to a Pentagon backwater with little, if any, supervision. The end result was one of the finest military aircraft ever built, a plane essentially constructed around a 19.5-foot, 4,000-pound cannon that fired 30mm depleted uranium bullets at a blistering rate. Looking like it was built from discarded airplane parts, it was probably the ugliest combat aircraft ever built, thus the "Warthog" appellation. But it was also an incredibly reliable ground attack aircraft, beloved by ground troops from Iraq to Afghanistan. Despite repeated attempts to replace it with stealth aircraft and drones, over 280 A-10s remain in service today, serviced by dedicated and imaginative engineers and maintainers, and defended by a fervent cohort of advocates descended from the Military Reform movement. R. Haydon gave a famous dinner party in his painting room in London. He invited, among others, three of the greatest literary lights of the age: the poets John Keats and William Wordsworth and the essayist and wit Charles Lamb. Over the course of a long winter evening of delights, the guests recited poetry, indulged in high-minded conversation, and took part in ridiculous antics, with such displays of brilliance and wit that the party came to be known as the Immortal Dinner. Penelope Hughes-Hallett celebrates this unique gathering by vividly bringing to life these illustrious diners against a backdrop of social change. Literary London society was at its extraordinarily gifted best just two years after Waterloo: the Elgin Marbles controversy still raged; Mrs. Siddons performed Lady Macbeth in her drawing room to a distinguished audience; Joseph Ritchie, a young physician and would-be poet, prepared to explore the River Niger with a copy of Keats in his pocket. The Immortal Dinner offers a fascinating glimpse into the lives and thoughts of this literary elite at a turning point in English society. Aalto's ecclesiastical oeuvre is viewed as an evocative subgenre of the practice's portfolio, but its relationship to religion has eluded enquiry. Where previously discussed, the longstanding collaboration between Aalto and the Church has been put down to reciprocal expediency, and the buildings perceived as spatially and structurally stirring experiments, yet devoid of religious meanings or implications. The idiosyncratic plasticity of the Church of the Three Crosses (1955-58) in Imatra, Finland-the most famous and architecturally impressive of Aalto's churches-is cited as ultimate evidence of Aalto's exploitation of the religious brief for the creation of a 'sculptural irrationality'. This book challenges the assumed autonomy of Studio Aalto's ecclesiastical oeuvre from religion. Analysing designs for churches, parish centres, funerary chapels and cemeteries in Finland, Denmark, Germany and Italy, the book shows that Aalto's engagement with religion transcended artistic opportunism. The book addresses Aalto's sacred oeuvre in its entirety, yet pays particular attention to the Church of the Three Crosses, broadly considered the apotheosis of Aalto's sacred career. Through a detailed analysis of the religious actors and factors that shaped the design and construction of Aalto's sacred works-from local parish building committees to bishops, and from liturgical reform movements to post-war debates on sacred art-this book shows that religious influences were neither extrinsic nor peripheral to Aalto's modernism, but intrinsic and intimately related to it. The study of previously uncovered primary archival materials establishes that Aalto's engagement with the Church was a consciously and productively symbiotic partnership which drew from shared interests and values, yet which also encompassed compromise and conflict. The resultant buildings neither glorify nor deny institutional religion - instead, this book argues, they challenge rigid dogmatism in religion as much as in modern architecture.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0597/7689/2989/files/9781848226227_ee6d8fc1-77d1-4c08-9c90-7400ea4c3f2b.jpg?v=1717316226
embroidering-the-landscape-women-art-and-the-environment-in-british-north-america-1740-1770
Embroidering the Landscape: Women, Art and the Environment in British North America, 1740-1770

Linking histories of women, relationships to the natural environment, material culture and art, Andrea Pappas presents a new, multi-dimensional view of eighteenth-century American culture from a unique perspective. Super recognizers can recall faces from only the briefest exposure, while face blind people lack the capacity to recognize faces at all, including those of their closest loved ones. Informed by archival research, the latest neurological studies, and testimonials from people at both ends of the spectrum, Pearl tells a nuanced story of how we relate to each other through our faces.
The category of face recognition is relatively new despite the importance of faces in how we build relationships and understand our own humanity. Pearl shows how this most tacit of knowledge came to enter the scientific and diagnostic field despite difficulties with identifying it. Pearl explores the shifting ideas around the face-recognition spectrum, explaining the effects of these diagnoses on real people alongside implications for how facial recognition is studied and understood. Face blindness is framed as a disability, while super recognition is framed as a superpower with no meaningful disadvantages. This superhero rhetoric is tied to the use of super recognizers in criminal detection, prosecution, and other forms of state surveillance. Do I Know You? demonstrates a humanistic approach to the study of the brain, one that offers an entirely new method for examining this fundamental aspect of human interaction.
The combination of personal narratives, scientific and medical research, and high-profile advocates like Oliver Sacks helped to establish face recognition as a category and a spectrum in both diagnostic and experiential realms. It is a fascinating social and culinary history exploring the integration of red sauce food into mainstream America alongside the blending of Italian immigrant otherness into a national American identity. Some dishes like fettuccine Alfredo and spaghetti alla Caruso owe their success to celebrities, and Italian-American cuisine generally has benefited from a rich history in popular culture. Drawing on inspiration from Southern Italian cuisine, early Italian immigrants to America developed new recipes and modified old ones. Ethnic Italians invented dishes like lobster fra Diavolo, spaghetti and meatballs, and veal parmigiana, and popularized foods like pizza and baked lasagna that had once been seen as overly foreign. For more than a century, illustrators have kept coming back to Twain's original Express stories to add their own drawings to the humorist's legacy. The Illustrated Mark Twain and the Buffalo Express collects ten feature stories published by Twain in the Buffalo Express during his year-long tenure at the publication, accompanied by illustrations drawn by five artists over a span of nearly 115 years alongside insightful analysis from author and Twain scholar Thomas J. Reigstad. There is the drawing by Twain himself, created in 1870; originals by Express staff artist John Harrison Mills in the fall of 1969; and those featured alongside his Express stories by his favorite contemporary illustrator, True Williams, who would be the principal illustrator of Twain's The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Sketches, New and Old. This book also includes 10 humorous illustrations created by Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Tom Toles for a 1978 Buffalo Courier-ExpressSunday Magazine series reprinted here for the first time, as well as a cartoon drawn in 1983 for the Mark Twain Journal by Bill Watterson, the cartoonist and author of the comic strip "Calvin and Hobbes." Finally, this volume contains two 21st-century caricatures of Twain, one as he looked in his early 30s in Buffalo and a second of him decades later as a literary lion, drawn by cartoonist Adam Zyglis - another Pulitzer Prize-winner - for the Buffalo News. To be precise the 150th or sesquicentenary for the unearthing of this monumental find that since or before has had no rival. The October celebration seemed to be a natural flow on event from the one I organised and in 1985. John Holtermann and his brothers also attended this ‘Holtermann Centenary Festival held over Easter 1985 recognising 100 years since Holtermann’s death on 29th April 1985. There is much more as yet untold information about its discovery and the domino effect created to benefit Australia. A true to scale replica of the Beyers and Holtermann Specimen for the public to admire and pose with for a photo is located at the entry to the History Hill Museum. I can advise I have spent over 50 years researching and writing to ensure the information is correct including over 40 years association with Holtermann descendants. Be assured, I have done the hard yards being employed to lecture on gold during the 1980s and 1990s at the Mining and Geological Museum, The Earth Exchange and The Royal Australian Mint Museum in Sydney to name a few. I also appeared on The Midday Show and as far back as 1983 on what was the Good Morning Sydney with Maureen Duvall Show a forerunner for the morning talk shows. This one is on YouTube although I didn’t put it there. In one week I was on all four Sydney television stations, regarded as an expert Hill End, gold and Holtermann. Since then my main focus has been a museum. For me this sesquicentenary event represents a once in a lifetime final presentation. In theory, research, documenting preserving and displaying history is a self gratifying enjoyable pursuit. This memoir tells how Mueller, a pilot in one of the RAF's Norwegian squadrons, was shot down by the Luftwaffe over the English Channel in June 1942. After some days at sea in his Spitfire's life raft, he made it to land in Belgium but was soon captured by the occupying Germans and sent as a prisoner of war to Stalag Luft III (now in Zagan, Poland). Mueller vividly describes life in the camp, how the escapes were planned and relates the compelling story of his personal breakout. It discusses the pleasures and problems of post-medieval architectural classicism, both its rigour and flexibility, its perfections and incompleteness, its continuities and innovations, and its expressiveness - from the camp to the sublime, and from originality to plagiarism. Abandoning conventional chronological, biographical or stylistic arrangements, the book makes connections between familiar art historical periods, focusing on looking closely at the buildings and their details, from which useful generalisations emerge. The book discusses how Renaissance architects, when faced with the bewildering variety of classical antiquity, produced canonical versions of the orders and thus a systematic method of designing in the antique manner. It asks how the highly regulated language of classicism can sustain the originality of a Michelangelo, a Soane or a John Simpson and looks at the human body in relation to classical architecture. On further investigation, Fidler discovered this was just one of countless reports from Arab and Persian travellers of their adventures in medieval China, India, Africa and Byzantium. Put together, he saw these stories formed a crazy quilt picture of a lost world.The Book of Roads & Kingdoms is the story of the medieval wanderers who travelled out to the edges of the known world during Islam's fabled Golden Age; an era when the caliphs of Baghdad presided over a dominion greater than the Roman Empire at its peak, stretching from North Africa to India. Imperial Baghdad, founded as the 'City of Peace', quickly became the biggest and richest metropolis in the world. Standing atop one of the city's four gates, its founder proclaimed: Here is the Tigris River, and nothing stands between it and China.In a flourishing culture of science, literature and philosophy, the citizens of Baghdad were fascinated by the world and everything in it. Inspired by their Prophet's commandment to seek knowledge all over the world, these traders, diplomats, soldiers and scientists left behind the cosmopolitan pleasures of Baghdad to venture by camel, horse and boat into the unknown. Those who returned from these distant foreign lands wrote accounts of their adventures, both realistic and fantastical - tales of wonder and horror and delight.Fidler expertly weaves together these beautiful and thrilling pictures of a dazzling lost world with the story of an empire's rise and utterly devastating fall.Praise for Ghost Empire'...thanks to the stylish cleverness of an exceptionally curious and talented man, we can feast on what strange magic the city brought - and still brings today - to the world beyond. The losses were appalling: defeat seemed to beckon.
This is the saga Max Hastings unfolds in his first full length narrative of the Royal Navy, which he believes was the most successful of Britain’s wartime services. As always, he blends the ‘big picture’ of statesmen and admirals with human stories of German U-boat men, Italian torpedo-plane crews, Hurricane pilots, destroyer and merchant-ship captains, ordinary but extraordinary seamen.

Operation Pedestal describes catastrophic ship sinkings, including that of the aircraft-carrier Eagle, together with struggles to rescue survivors and salvage stricken ships. Most moving of all is the story of the tanker Ohio, indispensable to Malta’s survival, victim of countless Axis attacks. In the last days of the battle, the ravaged hulk was kept under way only by two destroyers, lashed to her sides. Max Hastings describes this as one of the most extraordinary tales he has ever recounted. Until the very last hours, no participant on either side could tell what would be the outcome of an epic of wartime suspense and courage.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0597/7689/2989/files/9780008364984_742ba6bc-97db-460a-80c5-d95fe0811526.jpg?v=1719670524
tobruk-75th-anniversary-edition
Tobruk 75th Anniversary Edition
The definitive account of when Australia's famed Rats of Tobruk they took on General Erwin Rommel, The Desert Fox.

The classic story of 1941's Battle of Tobruk, in which more than 15,000 Australian troops - backed by British artillery - fought in excruciating desert heat through eight long months, against Rommel's formidable Afrika Korps.

During the dark heart of World War II, when Hitler turned his attention to conquering North Africa, a distracted and far-flung Allied force could not give its all to the defence of Libya. The AIF's defence of the harbour city of Tobruk against the Afrika Korps' armoured division is not only the stuff of Australian legend, it is one of the great battles of all time, as against the might of General Rommel and his Panzers, the Australians relied on one factor in particular to give them the necessary strength against the enemy: mateship.

Drawing on extensive source material - including diaries and letters, many never published before - this extraordinary book, written in Peter FitzSimons' highly readable style, is the definitive account of this remarkable chapter in Australia's history.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0597/7689/2989/files/9781460751916_a160b5b8-aff0-4057-950f-13f6185d7605.jpg?v=1719670530
vietnam-an-epic-history-of-a-tragic-war
Vietnam: An Epic History of a Tragic War
THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER

‘His masterpiece’ Antony Beevor, Spectator

‘A masterful performance’ Sunday Times

‘By far the best book on the Vietnam War’ Gerald Degroot, The Times, Book of the Year
Vietnam became the Western world’s most divisive modern conflict, precipitating a battlefield humiliation for France in 1954, then a vastly greater one for the United States in 1975. Max Hastings has spent the past three years interviewing scores of participants on both sides, as well as researching a multitude of American and Vietnamese documents and memoirs, to create an epic narrative of an epic struggle. He portrays the set pieces of Dienbienphu, the Tet offensive, the air blitz of North Vietnam, and less familiar battles such as the bloodbath at Daido, where a US Marine battalion was almost wiped out, together with extraordinary recollections of Ho Chi Minh’s warriors. Here are the vivid realities of strife amid jungle and paddies that killed 2 million people.

Many writers treat the war as a US tragedy, yet Hastings sees it as overwhelmingly that of the Vietnamese people, of whom forty died for every American. US blunders and atrocities were matched by those committed by their enemies. While all the world has seen the image of a screaming, naked girl seared by napalm, it forgets countless eviscerations, beheadings and murders carried out by the communists. The people of both former Vietnams paid a bitter price for the Northerners’ victory in privation and oppression. Here is testimony from Vietcong guerrillas, Southern paratroopers, Saigon bargirls and Hanoi students alongside that of infantrymen from South Dakota, Marines from North Carolina, Huey pilots from Arkansas.

No past volume has blended a political and military narrative of the entire conflict with heart-stopping personal experiences, in the fashion that Max Hastings’ readers know so well. The author suggests that neither side deserved to win this struggle with so many lessons for the 21st century about the misuse of military might to confront intractable political and cultural challenges. He marshals testimony from warlords and peasants, statesmen and soldiers, to create an extraordinary record.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0597/7689/2989/files/9780008133016_ca907cdf-1e56-47e4-a823-c41c60edf82f.jpg?v=1719670534
