On 19 September 1994, the Rabaul Volcano in East New Britain, Papua New Guinea, erupted for the second time this century, killing five people and devastating the town of Rabaul and many nearby villages. Klaus Neumann first became acquainted with the Tolai when he did research for his PhD in Pacific History.Between 1986 and 1988, he lived in Lakakua, a village on the Gazelle Peninsula.
